But first some basic information about athletes

Athletes can be found all over the world in an array of sports. The skills and abilities of some athletes are naturally better than others, allowing them to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Some athletes participate in sports because they love the game and want to spend as much time training for and playing that particular sport. Others strive to do well in sports for the glory that comes with being on a winning team.

Many athletes from around the world train to take part in the Olympic Games. It is a very prestigious honor to represent your country in these games. Coming home with the gold medal for your sport is the dream of all who compete in the Olympics. Yet this is also a display of showing unity around the world to others.

For those who are professional athletes, there is an unbelievable amount of pressure to perform at peak levels all the time. They spend hours a day training both during the season and during the off season. The amount of money professional athletes get paid is unbelievable, especially in the more popular sports such as football and basketball. The amount of money some of them earn from endorsements is sometimes more than they earn in a season.

This has lead many professional athletes to crumble under the pressure. They know that younger athletes may replace them. They also know if they let their injuries hinder their performance then they may soon be replaced. This can lead to using performance enhancement drugs. Most professional athletes are subjected to drug testing but that doesn’t always solve the problem. The issue of performance enhancement drugs has even caused controversy in the Olympics. Steroids and other substances continue to be used by athletes.

Athletes are often categorized by society as role models so when they are involved in illegal drug use to help their performance it can hurt their credibility both on and off the field. In recent years there have been plenty of athletes involved with the law due to drunk driving offenses, criminal activity, and even domestic violence. While society views athletes in a spotlight, they are not above the law.
